Hired Attorney 2023-2024I HATE HER. She did not at all take my side on what I was going through and she was supposed to represent me in court because for some reason I could not be in court. But overall the court outcome is not what I wanted at all. She did not advocate for me at all. She never reached out to me the whole time she was my GADL. Would not recommend, this was expensive too! 3,000 down the drain. I feel bad for my parents debt lol.

Hired Attorney 2013-2017Stacy Van Dyken is the laziest attorney in Grand Rapids Michigan. Refuses to respond and to help out children she is assigned to work with. Billing hours increase while Stacy is not following up on child abuse incidents. Stacy will string out your case for years while your children continue to get abused. Stacy is a complete waste of time and money. Stacy does not possess what is the best interest of the child along with is not a parent. Represent yourself or find any warm body with a heartbeat to represent you or your child before you waste your energy on Stacy.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
