Consulted Attorney 2022-2025Very poor attorney. The profession is noble. Not sure how she has clients. The above is based on my personal experience with her.

Hired Attorney 2021A thousand thumbs up! I was on a mission to find the very best lawyer for revocable living trusts earlier this year (2021) after I discovered some truly glaring omissions in our current trust documents. I was looking not only for a “fixer,” but someone who could put us on the right track, and then stay with us for annual reviews and updates as we age, retire, and relocate. I found Marlaine Teahan online and decided to call her after reading a list of honors and awards after her name that just went on and on. But I knew these substantial accolades, as wonderful as they are, wouldn’t in and of themselves make Mrs. Teahan the right choice for my husband and me unless I determined I could entrust to her the most personal details (health, income, savings, debt) of our lives. It’s a scary thing to share that kind of information with a stranger! Mrs. Teahan wasn’t a stranger for long. During the initial call, she was friendly, unhurried, and genuinely interested in learning about us. By the time I hung up, I’d found the attorney I wished we’d started with. We began our journey with Mrs. Teahan in mid-March, and concluded with our new trust documents signed, sealed and delivered on June 9 (today). Mrs. Teahan was unbelievably thorough in walking us through, step-by-step, every aspect of what we needed to achieve our goals. She was prompt in replying to emails, and very patient in helping me understand some of the more difficult features of what we were working together to accomplish. Friendly, dependable, honest, and incredibly knowledgeable about both asset protection and tax minimization – that is how I can best describe Mrs. Teahan’s work with us on restating our revocable living trust. Her fee is very reasonable; in fact, I feel as if I received far more than I paid for (fantastic new trust and even more fantastic peace of mind!). My husband and I are now able to relax and know that our final wishes are succinctly expressed, and that they will be carried out in the most efficient, tax-favored way possible. Yay! I should add that the icing on the cake of our relationship with Mrs. Teahan is that she is willing and available to meet with us every year to go over our new documents to determine if changes will be necessary in light of law changes or even a move south after retirement. Calling on resources from around the country, she is able to assist us from Michigan regardless of the state in which we choose to reside. She makes everything so easy! I simply cannot say enough about what a positive and successful experience we enjoyed as a result of partnering with Mrs. Teahan to achieve our trust goals. How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
