Attorney Information

Overview

Eric Stempien is a dedicated trial attorney with more than 20 years of experience representing individuals in civil litigation matters. Eric specializes in employment litigation, including sexual harassment, discrimination claims. He also practices in the areas of civil rights violations, police misconduct matters and personal injury. Eric brings a thoughtful, yet aggressive, approach to litigation. He is known for fighting hard for his clients.

For the first ten years of his career, Eric worked at a boutique law firm in Northville, concentrating his practice in employment litigation and personal injury. He worked his way up to the position of managing partner at the firm. Following that law firm experience, Eric was hired as General Counsel for a health care provider in the Metro Detroit area. In that role, he provided full legal support to the executive committee of the corporation, including areas such as litigation, health care law and personnel decisions. He also managed all outside litigation on behalf of the corporation. After several years away from litigation, Eric determined that his passion was in the courtroom fighting on behalf of his clients.

Eric attended the University of Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1994, with a major in political science. During his time at Michigan, he was elected to serve as the President of the Undergraduate Political Science Association. Eric graduated from the Wayne State University Law School, with honors, in 1998.

Eric is admitted to practice in every court in the State of Michigan, as well as the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan and the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Eric lives in Metro Detroit with his wife and two daughters.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
