He answered all my questions professionally, dispelled my concerns and gave me hope. When I met him in the office, his patience, extensive legal knowledge and smart methods just convinced me that he was exactly the lawyer I was looking for! I was beyond impressed. He communicated in time with me and notified me of the progress quickly. His charge is very reasonable and his service goes well beyond what he charges. He fought so hard for the good outcome of my case from the day I contacted him and gave me the best result he could. Howard is very honest, smart, powerful, knowledgeable, effective and caring. He knows the criminal code like the back of his hand. I am very pleased with the level of care he took in his work. I am very thankful for the help he has provided me with. If I would refer to an attorney, I believe Howard is the best! I would strongly recommend him!"

Verified ClientHired Law firm 2025-2026I had an outstanding experience working with Howard Bass at Bass Law Firm. From start to finish, he was extremely helpful, realistic, and transparent about the legal process. Howard offered clear guidance and remained supportive every step of the way, which made a stressful situation much more manageable. Thanks to his expertise, I was able to achieve the best possible outcome — a favorable financial result and no impact on my record. His strategic approach and honest communication truly set him apart. The fees were very reasonable, and I appreciated the fact that he offers flat-rate pricing for certain services along with flexible payment options. It made the process much more accessible and straightforward. I highly recommend Howard Bass to anyone in need of reliable legal representation. His professionalism, integrity, and results speak for themselves.

Verified ClientHired Law firm 2023-2025Mr. Bass was wonderful to work with. From the start to the very end he was always open to answering questions. Especially for me who knew little to nothing about court operations. He always kept my best interest in mind with every decision. Would definitely recommend to anyone!

Firm Information
Overview
Since I opened the Bass Law Firm in 2004, it has offered premier criminal defense services south of the river at reasonable rates. Born and raised in Chicago, I enrolled at Mankato State University in 1977 to play football. I was elected student association president in 1980 and graduated the following year in the top 10% of my class with a degree in political science and economics.
I returned to Chicago to attend DePaul University Law School in 1981. I received the American Jurisprudence Award in Constitutional Law in 1982, became a managing editor of the DePaul Law Review the following year, and graduated in the top 10% of my class in 1984.
Fresh out of law school, I moved to the Mississippi Delta, the poorest part of America's poorest state, where I practiced as the Assistant Washington County Public Defender in Greenville, Mississippi, from 1984 to 1988. While there, I became a Mississippi Civil Liberties Union board member and helped elect Mississippi's first Black Congressman since Reconstruction. I also organized the Mississippi Public Defenders Association and was elected its president in 1987.
In 1988, I returned to Minnesota and became an associate at Thomson & Ellis in St. Paul. The following year, I left Thomson & Ellis to be an associate at Meshbesher, Singer & Spence in Minneapolis. Other than retired Hennepin County District Court Judge Jack Nordby, I am the only Twin Cities lawyer to have practiced with Doug Thomson and Ron Meshbesher, both legendary Minnesota criminal defense attorneys.
I became a partner at Meshbesher & Spence in 1994 and practiced there until 2004, when I left to form the Bass Law Firm (originally known as Bass & Peck). During those ten years, I was a Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers board member and served as that organization's president in 2002.
In 2005, I was elected to the American Civil Liberties Union of Minnesota board of directors. I was also elected Senate District 35 DFL Chair and Minnesota Network for Progressive Action (mnpACT!) Treasurer.
Over the years, I have coached youth football, basketball and soccer in Lakeville. I have also taught Sunday school and led the youth group and outreach ministry at Open Circle Church in Burnsville. I also coached the Lakeville South High School mock trial team for four years, taking them to two state tournaments.
I am routinely recognized by Minnesota Law & Politics as a "Super Lawyer" and am also listed in The Best Lawyers in America . Minnesota Law & Politics has recognized me as a "Top 40 Criminal Defense Super Lawyer," and Minnesota Monthly has recognized me as one of the "Best Criminal Defense Lawyers in Minnesota."

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
