Verified ClientHired Attorney 2026From recent first-hand experience, the New Jersey legal system can be incredibly tenuous, unfair, illogical, and frustrating. While he would never characterize this bureaucracy as such, Omid Irani will go the extra mile, above and beyond expectations, to navigate through the quagmire. He is incredibly organized and thorough and when unexpected curve balls inevitably arise, he takes the time to correct course . . .a true professional and, more importantly, a solid person.

Verified ClientConsulted Attorney 2025I wanted to pay him to represent me as a victim in a case, but he explained that it wasn't necessary. Although he could have charged me, he preferred to give me the correct guidance without charging me.

Attorney Information
Overview
Omid S. Irani is a criminal defense attorney who represents individuals facing serious charges in New Jersey and New York. He handles all phases of criminal matters from investigation and arrest through motion practice, trial, and appeal and is known for his strategic, detail-oriented approach to complex and high-stakes cases. Mr. Irani regularly appears in Municipal and Superior courts where he defends clients in matters involving sex offenses, drug charges, firearms and weapons offenses, assault and other violent crimes, as well as theft and property-related offenses. He also has extensive experience representing clients in domestic violence proceedings, including Final Restraining Order hearings, and in complex weapons forfeiture matters, where he has successfully secured favorable outcomes.
Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Irani served as a law clerk to the Honorable Sohail Mohammed, P.J.Cr., in the Superior Court of New Jersey, Passaic Vicinage. In that role, he gained valuable insight into criminal trial practice, judicial decision-making, and the inner workings of the Superior Court. That experience continues to inform his approach to defending clients in criminal cases throughout New Jersey.
Mr. Irani is deeply involved in the legal community. He is the Immediate Past President and Trustee of the Young Lawyers Division of the Bergen County Bar Association, where he co-chairs multiple committees and regularly presents continuing legal education programs. He also serves as Chairman of the Iranian American Bar Association Foundation, a national organization dedicated to advancing the professional development of attorneys and he previously served on the Executive Board of the Iranian American Bar Association.
Mr. Irani earned his Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University School of Law, where he was a published member of the Seton Hall Legislative Journal. He remains active with the law school as a member of its G.O.L.D. alumni committee, which fosters connections among recent graduates. He received his B.A. in Political Science, with a double minor in History and Middle Eastern Studies, from Seton Hall University, becoming the first student in the university’s history to graduate with that combination of studies.
In addition to his work as a New Jersey criminal defense attorney, Mr. Irani serves in an appointed capacity in local government and is actively involved in community service and outreach. He frequently appears in media interviews to provide legal and policy insight on issues of public importance involving national and international affairs. He is also committed to mentoring future advocates, volunteering annually as a judge for the New Jersey State Bar Foundation’s Vincent J. Apruzzese High School Mock Trial Competition, the Princeton University Moot Court Competition and the American Mock Trial Association.
Mr. Irani is fluent in Persian (Farsi).

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
