    Hired Attorney 2019-2022
    Recommends this Attorney
I was arrested and charged with first degree homicide and was facing 20 years in prison. I had a different lawyer out of Toms River that I just was not happy with, he wanted to make a deal for a crime that I honestly did Not commit. I wanted to go to trial. I went out and interviewed 10 lawyers from Edgewater to Atlantic City when Steve Nelson was recommended to me. I interviewed him twice (2 consultation’s) and was sold. After I knew I had to find a way to hire him I found out his rate and was happy to find out he wa more reasonable than 90% of the attorneys I met with. We never had to go to trial because he proved I did not do it, took Ocean County Prosecutors to the state appeals court, and Won, had my house arrest lifted, and my charges dismissed as soon as we could get back into court thanks to Covid-19. My old attorney wanted me to take a deal for 3 years. I could not imagine leaving my wife and kids for 3 weeks, forget about 3 years. Do yourself a favor and hire Steve if you need so serious help. He will honestly fight for you.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
