Martin has a rare combination of skills, experience and incredible determination that enables him to obtain exceptional results for his clients.

Martin P. Skolnick is the founder and Managing Attorney of the Skolnick Legal Group. Martin represents general contractors, subcontractors, and owners in construction litigation and arbitration matters. Martin also counsels construction companies and their senior management teams with the numerous legal issues construction companies encounter on a daily basis, including change order disputes, contract disputes, construction lien preparation and filing, permit issues, and employee issues. Martin also has substantial experience handling a wide range of commercial, real estate, and personal injury matters.

Martin began his legal career by serving as a law clerk to the Hon. Jamie S. Perri of the Superior Court of New Jersey. After completing his judicial clerkship, Martin joined a prominent commercial and business litigation firm in New York City where he represented Fortune 500 companies in a broad range of complex commercial and construction litigation matters, including construction disputes, domestic and international disputes, multi-million dollar contract claims, and injunction proceedings involving non-compete and non-disclosure agreements.

Martin was then offered the opportunity to join a New Jersey-based litigation and real estate firm where he headed up the firm's commercial and construction litigation practice representing real estate investment companies and closely held businesses in a wide range of matters including construction disputes, commercial litigation, and real estate litigation matters.

Thereafter, Martin left private practice to serve as General Counsel to a large construction company servicing major commercial and retail projects throughout the Northeast. During his more than five (5) years as General Counsel, Martin advised senior management teams and supported daily business operations with respect to all legal and regulatory issues including commercial contracts and disputes, litigation and risk management, business development, regulatory compliance, employment and human resources, intellectual property, and general corporate matters. He also appeared as counsel of record in numerous construction disputes in state and federal court in New York and New Jersey and successfully collected millions of dollars in disputed amounts owed to his client.

In his spare time, Martin is an avid reader and devoted athlete. He was a member of the Rutgers University golf team. After college Martin became a dedicated tri-athlete and runner. Martin previously completed two ironman triathlons and two marathons. While he no longer competes in long distance endurance events. Martin now applies that same focus, dedication, determination and persistence towards tirelessly working to achieve the best possible results for his clients.

    Hired Attorney 2016-2019
    Recommends this Attorney
When I found myself involved in a potential legal matter I sought professional advice. I met with a couple lawyers prior to my introduction to Martin. One attorney invited me to his office for "consultation" then refused to even open my file of documents without a retainer. His way-too-fancy suit and pinky ring further turned me off not only to him but what might lay ahead for me in my pursuit of justice. Then I got a call from Martin. I knew right away I was being heard. He asked specific questions and got a good sense of my issue but wanted to see my documents. He invited me to his office where we sat down and went over some key facts. We were both certain that based on the facts of my case contact from an attorney would be enough to end the issue. Fast-forward 3 years and my case finally settled, days shy of trial. It was an unexpected journey with plenty of legal nuance (always well-explained)and, in Martin's capable hands, I made it through. I'm just a single first-time homebuyer who got bamboozled by a charlatan contractor. I'm sure I was one of Martin's smallest clients but never felt that way. I am forever grateful to Martin and his team; their expertise and guidance got me through one of the toughest times of my life.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
