Hired Attorney 2023I have needed a bankruptcy filing all year. Patrick told me to do a credit counseling certificate and get it to me and then he’d be in touch. He confirmed receipt of the certificate in early March. I spent the next months following up with emails and voicemails to confirm the process wasn’t waiting on me and asked him to call me. He finally responded today and acted like he had no idea who I was and that I never had an appointment. He is now unwilling to make it right by circling around on my filing and getting it done. A call to the NYS Courts Attorney Grievance office might be in order

Hired Attorney 2022-2023He was paid 3,000 to represent my Mom for a bankruptcy/house foreclosure. He did nothing to help her. The bankruptcy got thrown out due to his lack of I formation..In the meantime he told her to give away her horses. She did so he could list the house for sale..We found a buyer in 1 wk and had it sold pending the mortgage paperwork. 4 months later, no Dale and now it was auctioned as a foreclosure. He's a liar and not trustworthy attorney. Do not use him! Incompetent of his job and stole her money. She could of let it go 5 months ago and not cost her about 10,000. With no place to live now..How can he do this to a 81yr old..

Consulted Attorney 2020The information that I received from Mr. Balkin was more valuable than any I received since moving to NY state in 2011.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
