Attorney Information

Overview

Jeffrey Klein concentrates his practice in the field of matrimonial and family law.

Mr. Klein was born outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, attended The Mercersburg Academy and then Clark University where he obtained his Bachelor's degree in 1974. Mr. Klein attended St. John's University School of Law and obtained his Juris Doctorate in 1977. Since the beginning of his legal career, Mr. Klein has been exclusively a matrimonial lawyer.

Mr. Klein handles cases between married couples in Supreme Court involving divorce, custody, support and equitable distribution, as well as cases between both married and unmarried couples in Family Court, involving family offenses (orders of protection), paternity, custody and child support. Mr. Klein has appeared before the trial courts of all 5 boros of New York City, as well as appearing in Westchester County and Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island. Mr. Klein has appeared and argued cases before the Appellate Division.

Because of the high financial and emotional costs of protracted litigation, Jeffrey's first emphasis is on exploring whether the client's objectives can fairly be achieved through a negotiated settlement. However, in those cases where a fair settlement cannot be achieved, Mr. Klein takes aggressive professional steps and works diligently to ensure that his clients are prepared to achieve the best possible result in Court, as was the case in Anonymous v Anonymous, 107 AD 3d, 04553, a custody case involving two young children. Mr. Klein was successful after a lengthy trial in having custody awarded to his client and was successful, again, after the other side took an appeal.

Mr. Klein also counsels clients who wish to enter into a prenuptial agreement or a separation agreement.

In 2014, Mr. Klein was admitted as a Fellow into the New York Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. As set forth on the organization's national website, "To be represented by a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers is to be represented by a leading practitioner in the field of family law. The 1650 AAML Fellows across the United States are generally recognized by judges and attorneys as preeminent family law practitioners with a high level of knowledge, skill and integrity. Academy Fellows enjoy a reputation for professionalism, competence and integrity."

In addition to the AAML, Mr. Klein is a member of the New York State Bar Association, Family Law Section. Mr. Klein has been cited for his pro bono efforts in providing representation for those unable to afford an attorney.

Mr. Klein resides in Manhattan and enjoys reading, riding a Pelaton, jogging around Central Park reservoir, and hearing live music. He is married with an adult daughter.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
