Engaged Peter over a decade ago to handle contentious family dispute from another top firm. He has great trial "wits" and strategy that spans beyond the law, informed by family dynamics, financials and therapeutic. He is well regarded by his peers and the judges, and is always heard out -- he focuses on winning arguments and speaks directly to the court's concerns. He draws on depth of experience to find sensible solutions, and those instincts ensure favorable results. Peter has a great personal touch and, despite how long he's been practicing, still possesses empathy and passion for the craft.

Peter Nissman is an excellent matrimonial attorney and hiring him was the best decision I could have made at a difficult time. Sharp, highly strategic and deeply knowledgeable about New York matrimonial law.

When starting my divorce, I interviewed a few lawyers before Peter. They all asked the same 4-5 questions. On our first meeting, Peter asked about 30 questions, things I never even thought about. He listened to what I wanted and guided me when I was being unreasonably generous with my offer to get out of a very bad marriage. Peter stayed with me thru a very contentious situation with someone who fought every way possible including changing lawyers 4 times over 5 years. Every change got her less and less because Peter fought for me. My next relationship when it was time to get married refused to even consider one of Peter's prenups.

What a terrible attorney for representing my best interests through my divorce process. Not responding to communications. Whole process was sandbagged due to no follow up, not getting things done in a timely manner, and had little to no interest to my case.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
