Hired Law firm 2018-2020Arguably the most incompetent divorce lawyer you can find in Westchester County. She will be cordial at the initial intake meeting -- in hopes of securing a $15,000 retainer -- but don't count on proactive, thorough and effective negotiation on your behalf. At $500 an hour and an Ivy League wall degree, Ms. Hoffman's work is shoddy and lazy. Ultimately, she provided INCORRECT legal advice, resulting in a long, drawn out post divorce fiasco that she refused to help resolve. AVOID.

Hired Law firm 2018-2020IF you are going through a divorce and wish to hire a competent lawyer who will actively advocate for a fair settlement, RUN. Despite the education credentials and friendly initial consult (Remember: She is trying to secure a $15,000 retainer!), she is terrible. She only cares about complicated cases involving court, forensic accounting, etc. that will eat up the retainer (at $500 an hour) and incur substantial fees. My documents were all cut and paste jobs with mistakes. Only after signing did I realize she did NOTHING to secure an equitable result. I could have represented myself and walked with a better outcome. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
