Attorney Information

Overview

Maureen joined Johnson and Cohen in 2009 and has focused her practice exclusively in matrimonial and family law since that time. Maureen's experience includes handling custody, support, complex equitable distribution matters, and prenuptial agreements, among other family law matters. Maureen is a passionate advocate for her clients, protecting their rights in all aspects of their litigation. Her main goal is to reach a settlement even in the most acrimonious situations, however, she remains prepared to litigate when necessary. Maureen routinely appears in Supreme and Family Courts in Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Dutchess, Orange, Bronx and New York counties representing clients in pretrial, trial and enforcement proceedings, as well as in the Appellate Division, First and Second Departments.

Maureen is a member of several bar associations, including the New York State Bar Association, where she serves on the Executive Committee of the Family Law Section as a co-chair of the Continuing Legal Education Committee, and the Westchester County Bar Association, where she serves as the Secretary of the Domestic Relations and Family Law Section, and previously served as the co-chair of the Section's CLE committee. Maureen has frequently lectured at and prepared written materials for continuing legal education seminars sponsored by the Westchester County Bar Association and the New York State Bar Association.

Maureen has been recognized by Super Lawyers as a Rising Star in the New York Metro Area in 2018 and 2019, and has also been named a Rising Star by the New York State Bar Association's Committee on Leadership and Development.

Maureen earned her Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Roger Williams University in 2005, graduating summa cum laude, and her Juris Doctor from Fordham University School of Law in 2009, where she also received the Archibald R. Murray Public Service Award. While attending Fordham, Maureen participated in an internship with the Family Court Legal Program, run by the Women's Justice Center at Pace University Law School.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
