My legal process was HARD for me because it was a child custody case and my child’s other parent was only “fighting” to attempt to gain or not give money as a means of support. It was not in the best interest of our child. The process was long and unnecessarily drawn out, however when I found Amber and began working with her and her team, specifically Megan, things still were hard but my anxiety decreased. I’d made decisions that I shouldn’t have made prior to retaining Amber as my lawyer. She did the absolute best that she could to allow for a favorable outcome and still looking at the best interest of my child. She also allowed Megan to be in court with me for morale support because my anxiety would have likely gotten the best of me. Amber worked as hard as she could to get me as close to the desired outcome. My past decision made it challenging to get my absolute desired outcome without gambling and getting worse by letting a judge decide. I encourage you to really talk through all of your options with your legal team. If you are reading my post you are likely in need of legal guidance and I’d highly recommend Amber and her time over and over again.

    Hired Law firm 2026
I hired this firm to represent me in a contested custody matter and ultimately made the decision to change attorneys because I lost confidence in the representation. My concerns developed over approximately six months and involved much more than the outcome of my case. Throughout the representation, I repeatedly asked questions, requested updates, and sought clarification about important issues affecting my case. I was frequently met with delayed, vague, or incomplete responses. Despite retaining the firm for litigation, the overwhelming majority of my communication was with a paralegal. I had only one in-person meeting with the attorney and one substantive email exchange with her during the approximately six months I was represented. As the October 27, 2026 custody trial approached, I became increasingly concerned about the lack of proactive litigation strategy and trial preparation. Discovery had not been served. Important issues remained unresolved, and I frequently felt that I was identifying issues, asking what needed to be done, and pushing the case forward myself rather than receiving proactive legal guidance. A custody counterproposal that had been sent to opposing counsel also remained unanswered for months. I repeatedly sought information about the status of the proposal and what strategy would be used moving forward, but I did not feel that there was adequate follow-up or meaningful communication about the situation. I also had serious concerns about the preparation of a proposed Guardian ad Litem motion, which contained outdated information about my children, including incorrect ages, and did not adequately reflect the circumstances I believed were relevant to the request. When I raised my concerns about the representation and ultimately sought new counsel, the firm moved to withdraw. The withdrawal paperwork subsequently provided to me even contained the name of an unrelated individual in the body of the filing, which further reinforced my concerns about attention to detail. I understand that an attorney cannot control opposing counsel or the decisions of a judge. My concerns are about the representation I actually received: communication, responsiveness, proactive legal strategy, case management, attention to detail, and preparation for litigation. After approximately six months, I ultimately concluded that I could no longer have confidence in the representation and retained new counsel.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
