He sat in front of the court and never gave a difference for me on a uncontested divorce. He made me lose my job as a Correctional officer, he made me lose my kid and he made lose house, just because I'm black.

I retained Atty. compton for chapter 7 bankruptcy. At first, everything went alright. After he went over our issue, we didn’t see him nor talk to him till the 341 meeting. We dealt with his wife who is also his paralegal, Vanna Compton. She’s the one who puts the petition along with paperwork together. For some reason, Mrs. compton made a mistake on our address and misspelled my name. Therefore she had to ammend the petition. On the day of 341 meeting, the trustee was confused as to why he is seeing two petitions. Atty. Compton didn’t know what to say, thinking his wife filed the petition twice. I had to answer in behalf of him, saying that was probably when Mrs. Compton made a correction in my address and name. Atty. Compton had to thank me for that. Anyhoo, prior to the meeting, Mrs. Compton mailed me something with someone else’s information on it. I thought it could be a sample of something maybe? But then she also sent me an email version of it. I decided to call her and made clarification. She just apologized and asked me to shred it. Mrs. Compton is incompetent. I guess that’s what you get for hiring cheap lawyers. I also met this person at the 341 meeting but I didn’t approach her which i should have to warn her that i have her info with her social security number on it. I also did a reaffirmation for one of my cars and it took months for them to send the paper to the court. When I questioned her, she gave me a pissy answer, saying it doesn’t matter when they send it because it was up to the court to approve it.I gave her the benefit of the doubt. But then when we did another reaffirmation for the second car, i guess she learned from her mistake cos that one was done in a week. Anyway, my discharge finally came in the mail. The court sent my discharge letter and the lawyer sent me one too, congratulating me and what not. But after I flipped through the first page, guess what I found? Another document that belongs to someone else’s. I emailed Mrs. Compton and Atty Compton once again but never heard anything back. No apologies or anything. Now it makes me wonder, if they also sent my information to someone else by mistake. That was three instances that makes this lawfirm incompetent and ineligible for handing sensitive information. So no, i will never recommend them. EVER!!!!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
