    Hired Law firm 2021-2023
I am not quick to point out mistakes or shortcomings of a business because a lot of times things are simply a misunderstanding and have a solution, however my experience with the Jacksonville, NC King Law Firm is terrible. I hired an attorney over a year ago for a custody case. My attorney requested that I send in some files, which I did right away. Weeks passed without communication so I found myself constantly calling in/emailing to touch base. Without fail, every phone call consisted of me having to explain the basics of my case. I was asked to send the same files a total of five times because both my attorney and her paralegal claimed they hadn’t “seen them come through yet”. I sent them again every time. Naturally, I became concerned and I managed to get my attorney on the phone and it was revealed to me that the said files were received every they were sent but the issue was that she didn’t think they were the correct ones because they “looked different” then the forms she was used to in that county. My attorney knew I had just moved to NC from Virginia and that all of my prior orders/legal paperwork was from that court system. I wanted to keep moving forward and focus on the next step. More weeks passed and I get a phone call from my attorney letting me know that she had made a mistake with some dates that were off by literally 1-2 days of the filing requirement which resulted in my motion to be withdrawn. I was told that my motion would be re-filed correctly and I would get updated. Six months later there hadn’t been much progress with my case but I eagerly awaited for more information. The only update I got was a letter from the firm informing me that my attorney was leaving to open up her own practice. It was then that I understood her lack of focus but I was happy to get a new attorney within the firm. I received a letter clearly stating that I would be contacted by my new lawyer to touch base with my case. That never happened and when I got tired of waiting I reached out to them to set up a face-to-face meeting. I was given a date/time to meet. The meeting was set on a Monday - I called to confirm on Friday afternoon right before they closed and I was told by the paralegal (that set up my meeting) that my meeting was actually not in their calendar. I rescheduled and also spoke to another person at the firm about canceling my contract since this situation kept getting worse every week: I gave this person my information, was promised a call back but that never happened. So, eventually, I got ahold of my new attorney and explained the basics of my case - it was evident they hadn’t even looked at my file. I politely vented my frustration I was told that they were sorry but that I would get a new attorney again. Apparently, the changes at their firm were the cause of their communication delays. I spoke to my new attorney some time later in November and was assured everything was cleared to be filed to the courts. Two months later, here I am requesting an update to my case and the paralegal informed me that a judge has not been assigned to my case - but also that my attorney is no longer with the firm and NEW attorney has been assigned to my case yet again. I don’t know how long this new attorney has been assigned to my case and I am completely distressed with this firm and their lack of service, results and professionalism. It’s been over a year since I put my trust on these attorneys to help me with my complex custody case with nothing to show for. I understand they are a business and changes will happen but when will they understand the anxiety and stress they are causing me? My patience is being abused and it needs to end. I have given this team a number of passes but now it’s starting to ruin my everyday life. This afternoon I chatted with one of their Chat Agents and I requested to make a 1:1 meeting about my issue. My information was taken and now I will wait to get a phone call. Beware of King Law Firm.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
