    Hired Attorney 2025
This attorney was involved in the closing of my late grandfather’s home—hired by my mother, not me—and the experience was absolutely terrible from start to finish. Communication was almost nonexistent. Simple questions were either ignored or met with extremely rude, condescending replies that made it clear client care was not a priority. She was not just unprofessional but outright dismissive and patronizing in tone, making an already stressful and emotional process even harder to endure. At every turn, her attitude made it obvious that she viewed even the most basic inquiries as beneath her or an inconvenience. Despite the emotional and legal weight of the situation, there was no professionalism, no clarity, and definitely no compassion. The attitude in emails was dismissive and unhelpful (she issued a check to the incorrect name and downright refused to cooperate), as though being asked to do her job was somehow offensive. To make matters worse, her paralegal was completely out of the loop. She seems like a nice person, but it was clear she wasn’t being kept informed or empowered to help in any meaningful way. If she wants to further her career, she should seriously consider finding a better work environment—Michelle will only drag her career down. There was no sense of urgency or accountability. The process dragged on unnecessarily, and I never once felt like anyone involved was being treated with basic respect. Final note: If you have any sensitivity to cats or strong urine smells, avoid meeting in her office—it smells absolutely awful (I had sent a courier to deliver legal documents on my behalf and they filed a complaint). That alone says plenty about the level of care and professionalism you can expect.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
