Hired Attorney 2021-2022While I did not have daily interaction with Mr. Licata he was the partner who approved the engagement letters based on the intake info and reviewed the case when I complained about his attorneys. He is a partner in the firm, has managerial authority in the law firm, and responsible for his attorney’s actions. The firm did not give me vital information in order to make informed decisions, did not consult, failed to evaluate my case properly, didn’t have a strategy, did not fight for me, they argued for the defense, they behaved unprofessionally, conducted unauthorized and unnecessary work which they charged against my retainer, they always wanted to discuss things on the phone rather than in emails because they would deny and misrepresent facts after these calls. I outlined my grievances against the firm to Mr. Licata and I provided proof about his attorney’s actions yet instead of investigating and adjusting the firm’s fees he ignored every point I made and evidence I provided. He claimed that his attorney had fully responded to my issues and that he reviewed every communication between me and his lawyers and found no evidence of wrongdoing but could not provide a response or proof rebutting my claims with specifics. This was a horrible and costly experience I hope I will never have to repeat.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
