Most of us have found the need for legal counsel at some point in our lives. I am one of them. I met Dave Thomas in the early 2000’s for exactly that, “legal counsel” and then again in the late 2000’s. Dave did an amazing job, and I came out on top. I was able to return to college and earn my graduate degree. Even though Dave did not know, he was a silent mentor of mine. I wanted to help others in the way that he helped me. So, when I completed graduate school from OSU, I called Dave Thomas and asked for a meeting. So, we met, and I explained how he had changed my life unknowingly via his outstanding understanding of personal needs and how to implement the law to protect others. This year, I needed legal counsel again. So, I called Dave on a Saturday around noon and sure enough, he called me back four minutes later. Dave Thomas’s memory is beyond comprehension. Dave remembers the smallest details of not only your legal needs but also your personal needs. This is only one of the many values that Dave Thomas upholds. He is a pillar of our community, and I am very lucky to have the opportunity to know him and have him as my attorney. I just want to take a moment to thank Dave Thomas publicly as it is well deserved!

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
