Rebecca M. Black practices law in the areas of criminal defense, criminal appeals, expungements, family law, and bankruptcy. She earned her law degree from the University of Akron School of Law and excelled in her coursework, achieving the Dean's List and above a 3.0 GPA.
While in law school, she successfully competed for highly selective internships at the U.S. Coast Guard's legal offices in Cleveland, Ohio, and at the Cleveland Clinic's in-house legal department in Beachwood, Ohio. These diverse internships enhanced her research skills and taught her how to learn new areas of law quickly and thoroughly.
Rebecca gained experience in criminal defense work and appellate law during the two years she worked at the Appellate Review Office at the University of Akron School of Law. Her writing skills impressed the supervising attorney so much that she immediately started drafting and researching appeals, which most interns were not assigned to do until their second year of practice at the office.
Rebecca graduated magna cum laude from Ohio University in four years with two degrees: one in English literature and another in journalism. The E.W. Scripps School of Journalism was ranked seventh in the nation by news professionals in 2013. She independently directed and edited 20 student journalists' daily news coverage of city, state, and federal government events as a staff editor at the student-run newspaper at Ohio University.
These experiences trained her to use clear, every-day language to explain complicated situations and events. Rebecca can write compelling motions on your behalf because of her experience writing argumentative scholarly papers. Additionally, she can quickly ascertain the facts of your case because of her experience interviewing people from all walks of life-from public officials and poet laureates to indigent inmates.
With these skills and experiences, Rebecca is able to effectively apply her knowledge of the law to the facts of your case to make the strongest possible arguments on your behalf. She too is known for the kind of compassionate straight talk and tireless advocacy that Attorney Melissa Graham-Hurd has always dedicated to her clients.
Although her education and work experiences have taken her all across Ohio, Rebecca's true home is Summit County. She is a volunteer CASA/GAL (Court Appointed Special Advocate/Guardian Ad Litem) through the Summit County Juvenile Court, where she advocates for the best interests of abused, neglected, or dependent children of Summit County. Rebecca also volunteers with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) of Summit County.
Rebecca is an active member of the Akron Bar Association and is the Secretary/Treasurer of the New Lawyer's Section, in addition to participating in the Criminal Law section, the Family Law Section, the Bankruptcy & Commercial Law Section, the Solo and Small Firm Practitioners' Section, and the Lawyer's Assistance Committee. She also is a member of the Ohio State Bar Association, the Ohio Women's Bar Association, the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and the American BarAssociation.
