Hired Attorney 2022I agreed to pay $4k for the entire case, but asked if I could pay $2k and then another $2k in a couple of weeks. There was a payment mix up that occurred and my bank and PayPal did a chargeback because they red flagged the transaction. After he called to notify me, I immediately called my bank and told them it was an approved transaction. However, between PayPal and my bank, it took a long period of time to reverse the charge. A couple weeks later, the law firm dropped my case and I had to get a public defender within 2 days of the court date just because I was under the impression the bank was taking care of the matter but they assumed I was “playing games.” I hired them to avoid going to jail for something I didn’t do, but ended up going to jail for 30 days. After I got released, the bank finally released the payment of $2000 to them and the law firm took all of it. They said it took that long to go my discovery documents. I even offered to give them up to $800 for their time. And then he has the nerve to get nippy with me on the phone when I was trying to explain exactly what happened. Zack is only looking out for his pocket. Do not hire. They don’t have your back.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
