Hired Attorney Beverly Q. Watts 1995-2005
My mother hired Mrs Watts and paid her 7,500 dollars to appeal a manslaughter conviction I was found guilty of. Mrs Watts agreed with me that the trial was wrought with appealable errors and told me and my mom she would appeal the conviction all the way to the tenth circuit court in denver where she said the conviction would likely be overturned on one or more of the serious errors. Mrs Watts did file an appeal in the state appeal court as well as the western district court then when it was time to sent the very same appeal paperwork to the tenth circuit court she just didn't do it. My wife kept checking the tenth circuit courts docket and my name kept not being on it. I called Mrs Watts and she lied to me and told me an appeal to the tenth circuit court was automatic She ended up getting me time barred from the tenth circuit court. We filed a complaint with the Barr association where she also told them she thought it was automatic. How they didn't disbarr her I'll never know. We then sued her in the county district court and then the oklahoma supream court. All of the judges but one let her off the hook but one judges opinion said she should have been disbarred and should have had to give my money back. Will she handle your case like she did mine? Don't use her and you won't have to find out

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
