    Hired Attorney 2020
It's taken me over two years to write this review, because it's taken me this long to regain my functionality back and get to a place where I have the energy to write this. William J. Edgar was the lawyer of my landlord, who owned a building that had a siding issue that caused the building to become water damaged, and leaky washers in every unit that created an additional 6 feet of black mold to hide under the floors in my unit. When I moved into that building I was fully functional and in relatively ok health, despite having Lyme Disease for 15 years. I went dancing 3 times a week, worked a full time job, and was a graduate student. When I left that building after just 1.5 years, I couldn't walk, I had to drop out of my grad program, and I became bedridden for 2 years. It took a year before I could even walk again. It's been three years since I left that building and I am still spending thousands of dollars on my health, dealing with chronic fatigue, having lung issues, and working to regain my function back. I became isolated for several years due to being so sick, I had to throw out everything I owned due to it being covered in mold, and I have been separated from my family and friends due to now needing to be in a dry climate to continue healing. Instead of taking accountability and expressing sorrow for what their building did to me, my landlord hired scum of the earth William, who basically ran me and my lawyer around to run me out of money and force me to settle for a measly $10k, because he knew I couldn't afford a medical examiner to win my case. That $10k didn't even come close to covering the almost $200,000 in surgeries and treatment centers and traveling to specialists, that I had to do and go to in order to get my life back from the substantial black mold exposures I got from his client’s building. In fact, I now live in a trailer in the desert while I continue to still heal from that moldy building. While this was all from mold, William used the fact that I had lyme disease to say that this wasn't from mold, forcing me to get a medical examiner to win my case, when I had lyme disease for 15 years and it was never an issue, until I moved into this apartment with black mold hiding in the floors and walls. But sure, if I get a massive black mold exposure for 1.5 years, it's going to make my lyme worse. The caveat was that BEFORE moving in, I asked the landlord if they had any mold issues, because I knew I had to be careful of my health, and even though they knew about the bad siding and had already planned on getting it repaired in three months after me moving in, they lied and told me no. And William stood by his client despite knowing that they lied to me. I lost everything due to this exposure and it destroyed my life. While the mold was not in anyone’s control, the way they handled it and could have helped, was. The only thing I have left is my voice and to share my story. I suffered greatly due to William. I am now in immense debt and could have used what me and my lawyer asked for to get the care I needed right away, and would not have been left financially destroyed having to pay for it myself with credit cards and personal loans. I will never financially recover from this. During a time when I needed support, accountability, and help, William used his power to further hurt and harm. Karma will one day force compassion on this man.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
