Deanna Lyn Istik graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Administration of Justice. In an effort to further her legal career, Deanna attended West Virginia University and obtained her Master’s Degree in Legal Studies. She attended law school at Western Michigan University. During law school, Deanna worked for State Representative Kate Segal on various different laws and political movements. She was also highly involved in Moot Court, Mock Trial, and Trial Advocacy. Following law school, she transitioned right into working for the law firm of Davis & Davis as an associate, where she handled various personal injury, criminal, civil, and family cases. Additionally, during that time, she worked for the Fayette County Public Defender’s Office, wherein she successfully litigated criminal cases. During this time, Deanna handled serious crimes, drug offenses, alcohol offenses, sexual assaults, domestic violence, and attempted homicides.

In December of 2023, Deanna and Jill decided to open their own practice to represent clients in custody, support, divorce, equitable distribution, and criminal matters. Deanna focuses her practice on ensuring that her clients feel heard, appreciated, and well-provided for.

Hired Attorney 2021-2023Attorney Istik represented me for two years for a divorce that wasn’t that complicated. I expected it could take two years of work however, we had not accomplished much towards the goal of divorce. She was unorganized and the lack of communication kept me confused and out of the loop of decision making. I received a bill each month but was not seeing any progress with anything I was paying for. Several times I requested a meeting to get her face to face to talk about my questions and concerns. After representing me for a year, she mentioned needing to go through my files to learn more about my case. Each meeting was like meeting for the first time, starting all over again and getting no where. At one meeting she left me in a room for about an hour to go through my own files and said to “let her know if anything jumped out at me”. I didn’t understand most of what I was reading. When I voiced concerns over this, she responded that she had other paying clients she needed to get to. I had already given her over a year of my salary for fees but apparently other clients were paying more so they were the priority. I’ve never left a negative review for anything however, she made what was a really difficult thing in my life, so long and stressful. Her lack of compassion and urgency left me in a really bad place. Luckily I was able to get another attorney who got me a better deal and had a divorce agreement ready to sign within three weeks of meeting me. Her standard of professional and moral obligation to her clients should have you proceed with caution.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
