Maybe was a bad day for her, but one can do alot better. First strike was a set price was negotiated for a conference, then 2 weeks later billed for more money under guise of contract I had signed. A person is only as good as their word, and when price was negotiated it was just that, a price, not a retainer. Second strike was opposing male council was rather pushy and she was definitely intimidated by him. Third strike was during review of agreement paperwork made by court officers there was an error in the terminology used and I was the one that caught it before signing, not her. So I am at a loss of what I actually paid her for at this point. I emailed her questioning the charges as they were not what we agreed to, gave her time to send my check back in good faith, but she chose to cash it hence this review. YMMV, but better to shop around some more.

I have left you voicemail messages and look forward to speaking with you directly about your concerns. I understand your distress. Lawyer's fees and retainers can be confusing. You sent one email to which I responded promptly. Prior to your payment of the invoice and posting of this review, I tried to contact you several times, but did not hear back. It would be ideal to speak directly. I may not agree with your characterization, but I care about my clients' viewpoints. Rather than discuss by posting reviews, why not call me to discuss a resolution? Together, we can solve this.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
