Hired Attorney 2022A good lawyer will campaign for your best interests and acts on your behalf in a favorable manner to the situation, which I did not experience at all with her. She did not control my case at all. She had no strategic guidance in presenting to the other side. She did NOT prepare a good legal strategy, and left me with all the extra financial expenses. She did not represent my voice and interests at all. Upon her suggestion in using a divorce master, she stuck me with that total bill, which should have never happened. The extra finances she cost me should easily have been paid by the other side, but that was not even brought up or discussed. I got a lawyer who just went thru the motions, accepted whatever the other side suggest, gives you no strategic plan and does not fights for you at all. Good lawyers coach you through the process and always has your back in wanting the best for you, not the least. A resourceful lawyer would find ways to get you an advantage in presenting your case and ensures someone is working on your case all the time to present the big picture of what had happen. This never was the case. I was clearly a number to her and she put no effort into my case and it showed. At one point I had to send her an email asking her about my case and if she was still working on it since I did not hear from her in months? I should have followed my gut reaction in changing lawyers then, cuz I was not getting a good vibe that she was working for me. And I paid the price dearly. Unfortunately this was a very bad experience for me and clearly evident that she did not have my best interest at all, nor worked on my case.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
