Hired Law firm 2020-2021This firm basically took my money and did not do the work! IT was horrible. I had to hire another attorney and actually pay twice. This firm took my retainer fee and never did the work! I had my current attorney to redo everything! Save yourself the headache. It was a case of child custody, and I could have lost my child by them NOT responding in a timely manner to the courts and other stuff that my current attorney identified. Then once i fired her, she had the audacity to send me an email and said, well I am sorry I did not give your case enough time! It was soooooo much more she did not do, that if I did not already have knowledge from working at the courts, I would have LOST my case!!! Please please please please, exercise your decisions on selecting a lawyer with CAUTION!!!!! I was heart broken, because we were nothing but kind to these people and paid on TIME! NEVER LATE!!! I feel robbed!!

Hired Law firm 2001-2002I had a case that I had used another lawyer for and I wasn't getting anything from them. I called the Carter law firm and explained my case and what I wanted to be done. How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
