Paul has a trial and mediation practice. He has earned experience in all facets of trial from preliminary hearings through trial and appeal. He has tried to verdict cases in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Marshall federal courts and the state courts of Dallas, Collin, Tarrant, Denton, Harrison, Rusk, Lubbock, and Harris counties. He has argued cases before the Dallas Court of Appeals, Texas Supreme Court, and federal Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Paul started his legal career with the law firm of Worsham, Forsythe, Sampels & Wooldridge, L.L.P., a venerable Dallas firm started in the 1930's that focused on representation of railroads, utilities, and industrial clients. When Worsham Forsythe merged with the Hunton & Williams, L.L.P. in 2002, a 100-year-old Virginia-based firm, Paul joined as a litigation partner. Over the next seven years, Hunton & Williams grew to a firm with 1000 lawyers, 150 of which practiced in Dallas.

In 2009, Paul started his own firm, Wickes Law, PLLC. While he continues to represent large corporate clients, his practice now also includes the representation of individuals and small businesses. He has represented parties on both sides of the docket with generally an equal representation of plaintiffs and defendants over the last decade. He has handled all types of civil litigation from minor slip-and-fall claims for the plaintiff to commercial disputes with more than $50M at stake. The types of cases have included rail transportation and FELA litigation, car wrecks, medical malpractice, premises liability, large commercial and contract disputes , trucking accidents, take or pay disputes, and other significant personal injury claims.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
