    Hired Attorney David Owen 2015-2016
I don't know if this is considered hiring an attorney but he handled the title transfer of a home I purchased in 2016. The home was not as represented but I don't know if the attorney is responsible for the home passing inspection. Unbeknownst to me, in 2015, this attorney had some involvement with a member managed LLC that I managed at one time. One of the LLC farms was illegally logged. They were caught and their efforts were thwarted for a time. I tried to evict the tenant. This lawyer, representing the tenant, managed to get to somehow coerce other members of the LLC though I don't know the details of the correspondence because my member rights were violated and I was given no information. I was replaced as manager. There was no vote. The tenant stayed on the property and the remaining timber was logged. The LLC didn't receive a dime. I couldn't get a police report either. The home I purchased was not as represented. I had to pour money into it just to make it livable. Not to mention, I was being racketeered via vandalisms, break ins, and thefts. I couldn't get a police report for this either. The AC broke the first week. Every kitchen appliance had to be replaced within the first year. The six year old roof had holes and leaks. No one of the four toilets was installed properly so they were replaced. A water heater broke.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
