Run away & find someone else!! I cannot express how this man did nothing to help me legally, or otherwise, during my divorce. I was abandoned during breast cancer by my husband after 25 years. He was proven in court to be having an affair with a girl 23 years younger . He quit his job as to not pay me any support, (which is not smiled upon from the courts & is, considered illegal). He moved out of state. My husband was court ordered to pay me a a small, temporary support. He didn't pay on anything that he was ordered to by the courts. I suffered greatly & had much stress. Mr. Rutherford never kept me in the loop & forgot many key points to help my case. I was automatically winning the case, because I am sick, my husband stopped my insurance for a month, ( he was ordered to provide it- as myself being a cancer patient, that is despicable), my husband was having an affair & quit his $92,000 a year job to work for his new girlfriend for a mere $18,000 a year. With all this defiant, insolent, behavior from my "soon to be ex", I should have been obviously winning the case, but, Paul did such an incredibly poor job in representing me. It was hard to believe he had such a lack of understanding for the parameters of the law. It was as if he "appeared" to be "bought off" by my husband's attorney. Everyone would ask how the case was going & then I was strongly urged to fire him because it was obvious I was going to be left with nothing. My despicable husband just went on with his life & had no responsibility or, accountability for his devious actions. I asked Paul to file contempt, since that is what was happening. Paul said he would file for contempt since we had my husband "dead to rights", (according to the courts). Paul made me come in & he took my check for the contempt filing cost & then, told me the next day he had no intention to file contempt at all!! He STILL cashed my check for the contempt filing, even though he did nothing! Over the course, he took $13,000 dollars of my money for doing nothing. He cannot be trusted & I had to do all the work for him, so, I had to fire him. In 3 short months my new attorney has done more for me than Mr. Rutherford did in a year & 3 months. I will be contacting the bar association with proof of this deplorable behavior. He is not worth 1 star, let alone, one cent. According to other reviews on other sites, I'm not the only one who has had a bad experience with Mr. Rutherford. I will be contacting the Board of Professional Responsibility.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
