Jon breaks the stereotype of lawyers only caring about money. He helped me out at no cost, when a critical illness policy cancelled me and refused to pay when I actually had cancer. He was honest, helped me to understand the best decision for me both financially and stress level wise every step of the way. He helped me to get something when they were offering nothing, and he did so in an effort to try and help someone and be a good human.

I enlisted the help of Jon Michael Smith to help with appealing a denial of a pre-authorization. He worked with my medical providers, and we were able to have a successful outcome to the appeal. I was happy with the outcome and was glad I did not have to manage the process myself as I have done this in the past and it is very stressful and frustrating. Hiring Mr. Smith was money well-spent!

Jon Michael Smith was very thoughtful, honest, thorough, and empathetic. He clearly knew what he was doing. I was also very impressed as to how responsive he was whenever I sent him an email. Working with him made an existing stressful situation more bearable. I'd recommend him in a heartbeat to anyone.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
