Hired Law firm 2022-2024I hired Allecia Lindsey Pottinger Law Firm (ALP Law) to handle a divorce filing for me 2022. I originally only need help with finalizing of it since I file myself but the lawyer assigned to me at the time said it was rejected, so I would need to start over and of course pay more money. I was given a quote for the full process and ended up making a settlement with my now ex-husband based of that amount. After the settlement was paid ALP started tacking on all sorts of hidden and exorbitant fee. So much so that I came out in the red and had to go on a payment arrangement for several months past the divorce to pay it off. Finally 5/2023 I made my last payment per my zero balance ledger (good riddance or so I thought). Imagine my surprise when on 7/2024, nearly a year & a half since I?ve had any contact with the company is my card charged without notice or authorization for an ?outstanding invoice?. I reached out for a refund (clearly done in error I?m thinking) and got a rude response from the ?office manager? Ralijah Sampson, saying they have no intentions of returning my money. She attached 2 outdated invoices with inaccurate information that was supposed to justify the charge. I requested proof of services rendered, the alleged authorization and to have my payment information removed numerous times. I cc?d the owner of the firm Allecia Lindsey Pottinger who never even bothered to respond to correct or even acknowledge their accountant error. Now I have to go through a full bank dispute because of their shady pricing practices and unorganized accounting/booker. DO NOT USE THIS FIRM!!! They are incompetent, have horrible communication, terrible customer service, and will find a way to milk as much money as possible ethically or not! There are plenty of other reputable black owned law firm in Houston that are more reputable, reasonably priced and able to do a simple divorce in a faster time frame.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
