In my opinion, Mr. Hilles did not provide me with effective representation regarding my probate case. He charged me a large fee in advance, but he never accomplished any of my goals. It appeared to me that he did not take any action whatsoever to further my case. I deeply regret wasting so much time and money by hiring David E. Hilles.

David Hilles is a nice man but a very...very bad lawyer. He takes your money, listens to you, takes your documents, promises you to help you but he does not. When he is at the court he is not prepared, he does not know what he does!!! He is not punctual, he does not answer your phone and emails unless you persist several times. Always you have to follow up, he never inform you.(His secretary is awful and awkward like himself) If you want him to do something for you, many times you have to call and follow up. He forgets a lot!!!! He not only does nothing for you but also he ruins you. Not having a lawyer is better than having him, at least you don’t lose your money and you don’t get mad.

He is a nice man, but very...very bad lawyer. He not only does nothing for clients but also ruins them. For everything clients have to follow up he says nothing. He takes the documents but does not use them. He didn’t come to court on time. He could not defend me. He took me Dollars but didn’t do anything. He does not answer his calls except the call from his wife when you have meeting with him!!!! You have to call several times to his secretary, maybe he calls you back!!! Any answer from court he gets he does not inform you until you follow. Judge ordered, I got that after 2 weeks after following!!!! I wanted him to appeal. He only wrote a letter and told me that he would let me know about the result. He didn’t say anything for couple months until I sent him several emails. And finally he said that our motion wasn’t accepted.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
