    Consulted Attorney 2020
I was matched with her through a legalshield request. I made the request yesterday about a sensitive issue at my work. She called me back today and I missed the 800 number she called from while I was at work and unable to have a private conversation. I called her back 2 hours later and on my way out of the office and was told she'd call me back. I was driving home when I saw the phone rang once and went straight to voicemail and it was her. Before I even listened to the voicemail I called her back. She talked to me like I was 5 years old and shamed me for not answering the phone. She scoffed when she answered and said she didn't know why I didn't answer her call, when I explained why she snapped back that when a lawyer calls you, you should answer. I'm so shook up. I have paid four this service for over 6 years and rarely use, but I keep paying in hopes if I ever need counsel I'll be set up with someone knowledgeable and professional. What a huge disappointment during an already distressing situation.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
