Hired Attorney 2018-2019Former client in a federal criminal case. I hired Thomas J. McHugh believing I was receiving conflict-free, thorough federal defense representation. That did not happen. A serious conflict of interest existed within the defense team and was disclosed on the record, yet it was never properly addressed, explained, or waived before critical decisions were made in my case, including how the case would be tried and who would decide it. These facts are reflected in trial transcripts and post-conviction filings that are part of the public federal court record. In addition, despite my direct request, no subpoena was issued to the Midlothian Police Department for the personnel file of a key government witness. That file later proved to contain impeachment material that should have been obtained and litigated before trial. These were not minor or technical issues. They had irreversible consequences, including a nine-year federal prison sentence and the loss of my life’s work. There is a line in the book *Busted by the Feds* that I wish I had read before hiring counsel: “Another group of attorneys generally to be avoided is former U.S. Attorneys.” I understand now exactly why that warning exists. Don’t make the same mistake I made. Review the public record yourself. Ask direct questions about conflicts of interest, investigations, and whether critical subpoenas have actually been issued. Do not hire this attorney.
