Overview
Kyle C. Simpson is a San Antonio criminal defense attorney and Senior Trial Attorney at Michael & Associates Criminal Defense Attorneys. With more than two decades of legal experience, he has built a reputation as a skilled trial lawyer and dedicated advocate for individuals facing criminal charges. His practice focuses exclusively on criminal defense, including DWI offenses, assault allegations, drug crimes, weapons charges, probation violations, and other serious misdemeanor and felony matters throughout Texas.
A former prosecutor with the Bexar County District Attorney's Office, Mr. Simpson brings extensive courtroom experience to every case he handles. Over the course of his career, he has tried well over 100 jury trials to verdict and has represented clients in some of the most challenging criminal matters in Texas and beyond. His experience on both sides of the courtroom provides valuable insight into how prosecutors evaluate evidence, prepare cases for trial, and make charging and plea-bargaining decisions.
Beyond his courtroom practice, Mr. Simpson is widely recognized for his contributions to DWI law. Since 2009, he has served as co-author of the Texas DWI Law and Practice Handbook, part of the Texas Practice Series published by Thomson Reuters. Used by attorneys and judges throughout Texas, this authoritative resource addresses evolving DWI statutes, case law, and legal developments. His work on the handbook reflects a deep and ongoing engagement with one of the most complex areas of Texas criminal law.
During his tenure at Michael & Associates, Mr. Simpson has handled more than 260 criminal matters. His experience includes assault family violence allegations, unlawful weapon offenses, drug possession charges, probation violations, DWI offenses, and other complex criminal matters.
A significant portion of Mr. Simpson's practice involves defending individuals accused of impaired driving offenses. He has handled more than 75 DWI-related matters ranging from first-offense misdemeanors to enhanced and repeat-offense prosecutions. His experience includes cases involving blood and breath testing evidence, field sobriety evaluations, and other scientific and procedural issues commonly encountered in DWI litigation.
Mr. Simpson's professional accomplishments have earned recognition throughout the legal community. He has been selected to Thomson Reuters' Texas Super Lawyers list for DWI defense, an honor recognizing outstanding attorneys who have attained a high degree of professional achievement and peer recognition. He was also recognized among the Best Lawyers list published by Scene in SA Magazine and has earned a "Superb" rating on Avvo.
Known for his meticulous preparation, strategic thinking, and persuasive advocacy, Mr. Simpson approaches each case with a focus on protecting his clients' rights and pursuing the best possible outcome. Whether negotiating with prosecutors, litigating evidentiary issues, or presenting a case before a jury, he remains committed to delivering thorough and effective representation.
Mr. Simpson earned his Juris Doctor from St. Mary's University School of Law in 2003 and his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Economics from the University of North Texas. He is licensed to practice law in Texas, Utah, New Mexico, and South Dakota.
He remains active in the legal community through membership in the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association and the San Antonio Criminal Defense Lawyers Association.
Today, Mr. Simpson represents clients in San Antonio, Bexar County, and throughout Texas who are facing DWI, assault, drug, weapons, probation violation, and other criminal charges. Drawing on more than twenty years of courtroom experience, well over 100 jury trials, former prosecutorial experience, and his nationally recognized work in DWI law, he provides strategic, experience-driven criminal defense representation in high-stakes cases.
