Hired Attorney 2019I retained Drew on 10/31 and fired him by 11/6 for a very simple family law matter in which my ex was completely compliant with my requests. My first concern was the $5000 retainer which was twice as much as other attorneys I consulted with. By 11/1 I communicated with Drew that my ex and I were working out an agreement and he was not pursuing anything. After terminating Drew on 11/6 he billed me $4500, even though his hourly fees are only $225. I was billed for legal research on items I myself submitted to Drew and his paralegal and petitions that were never submitted to the court, approved or discussed with me even after I communicated with him that we were working things out and we did not have a hearing scheduled until March 2020. He claimed to draft a supervised visitation petition even after in writing I communicated to wait on a response as I was working with my ex and I didn’t even know If he was going to ask for visitation - which he did not pursue. His office was incredible frustrating and difficult to deal with. I called and asked to speak to the managing partner of the firm who refused to speak to me, return phone calls or return an adequate portion of my retainer. They gave me the run around for weeks being told by an assistant she would call me back until the judge accepted the dismissal and then they said we’re no longer your attorneys so we don’t need to speak to you. I am still fighting to get money returned for work not performed and the only response I got from the managing partner was if I don’t stop emailing their office they will involve their legal team against me and law enforcement. Drew billed $4500 for 5 and after terminating him I have absolutely nothing to show for the money spent. I now need to hire another attorney to actually do the work and submit my actual requests that Drew did not comply with.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
