I was hit by a car while riding my bicycle. This was the 3rd time being hit and I had not hired an attorney the first 2 times. On the 2nd time, I ended being billed for my medical expenses rather than the person who hit me taking responsibility. After the 3rd experience while left me with the most injuries, I thought I would try to find an attorney to represent me. I knew Roger casually but didn't think his specialty was personal injury. Luckily for me, we crossed paths just a few days later. He was so considerate in asking about my injuries, I called him and asked if he would consider taking my case. He agreed to do it and my worries were over. He took care of everything. I had his personal direct phone line and could talk to him or one of two assistants at any time. I consider myself very fortunate to have had Roger as my attorney and the considerable resources of his firm representing my interests.

Roger was hired to litigate a case against an attorney that absconded with hundreds of thousands of dollars from our small business. Roger was asked to secure the funds in question via a TRO against the defendant until the case could reach a hearing. Roger unilaterally opted against the TRO. Before we knew it the funds were gone. Roger is more interested in his own status and convenience than the interests of his clients. At one point he brought he cousin in to ‘consult’ in the name of billing extra hours. I strongly recommend against hiring him. His incompetence cost us over 2mil.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
