I used Scott Hansen's services after making a mistake on form 4473. I trusted that Mr.Hansen was a professional and that he would represent me efficiently, defending my right to effective assistance of counsel. Sadly, that was not the case. I should have known that he was going to discriminate against me when he raised the price from what he told me over the phone after meeting me in person. My second red flag was when he suggested that I was trying to buy guns to sell in the streets. The usual racist trope of black men being thugs, instead of contributors to society by working and paying taxes.Nothing about me suggested I had nefarious intentions unless you equate black skin and features to criminality. I was trying to purchase a personal firearm. I wanted to practice, as I was pursuing work in armed security. He convinced me that I was guilty because I didn't do my due diligence. After consulting other legal professionals this was not true advice from Mr.Hansen. It's safe to say that he knew that any conviction would prevent me from working in armed security. Nonetheless he still convinced me that pleading guilty was my best option versus going to trial. Now here I am in post conviction poverty, can't advance in a career and had to drop out of school, all my hardwork and ambitions down the drain, because of the discriminatory work of a supposed legal professional. Now, im not saying Mr.Hansen is an incompetent attorney but he definitely did not use his expertise to my benefit. He even got me jail time even though I had no record. So, it's my suggestion that if your a male of African descent to be careful trusting Scott Hansen with your life and future. With Scott Hansen I believe it's strictly politics, and black people usually get the short end of the stick.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
