Hired Attorney 2022-2024Asked me three times when my court date was (as my lawyer, how do you NOT know this information?) botched my first custody order, had to refile my case to get the amendments that I desired, and he ended up non suiting my case (without my permission) revealed personal information about my plans to the GAL, and to the other parties attorney, got agitated with me on several occasions for asking basic questions, does not respond to emails, had to email him and his paralegal several times JUST to get a response, and they would charge me each email I sent, has personal things going on in his private life that is affecting how he handles cases, (especially relocation cases), very rude with his tone, does not help at all, and does not have your best interest at heart! He was very dismissive to me the whole entire time. Told me to refile my case when I “had all of my ducks in a row” but I actually did have all of my ducks in a row! It took me a whole year to get this trial date, now it’ll probably take me a whole other year to get a new trial date. DO NOT HIRE HIM

Hired Attorney 2022-2023Collected retainer up-front. Impossible to get in touch with. When I did hear back from him it would take a month of contact, only to have him not remember anything about my case. It took a full year to get a court date. He gave me the wrong court date, getting my case dismissed. He never showed up at court, even on the date he did give me. He has never so much as returned a call or email in the two months since he got my case tossed out.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
