I first worked with Valerie in 1993. I have used her services over the years, as recently as this week in 2026. Valerie is quick to get an overall picture of the situation. While I've come to her with a particular issue, I've usually come with some emotional attachment to the circumstance. Valerie is a calming influence able to get to the resolution of the matter in a matter of fact, fair and equitable manner. Valerie is knowledgeable, capable, and efficient. I also trust that Valerie has approached any issue I've had in family law with the best interests of the parties involved. Her work, especially in custody arrangements, stood the test of time without the need for ongoing litigation or revisiting issues. Valerie allowed me to move forward with peace of mind. I highly recommend her services.

    Hired Attorney 2020-2021
First of all I have never written a poor review about anyone before. In this case I feel compelled to warn others. If she has put measures in place to mitigate what happened to me that would be great. I sent a certified letter asking for reassurance that she has put measures in place. She chose not to respond so here I am. I hired Valerie Bell on the recommendation of a divorced friend who used her for their divorce. I met with her in person before hiring her and felt good about her. Ms. Bell failed to properly upload documents I sent to her and thus failed to get them to opposing counsel. When there was clear confusion on her part and the part of the OC she never picked up the phone to try to figure it out. Instead things just kept heating up with OC making accusations. I even requested that she call OC. Four months later, I figured out what had happened. Ms. Bell admitted it but treated it as no big deal and deflected her responsibility. She did not fall on her sword, offering to own full responsibility to OC, instead behaved defensively. When I told her I needed to let her go and asked her to let OC know the response I received via email was...."Done." I have given her a chance to make amends and she has chosen not to respond to me in any manner. I have reported her to the WA State Bar Association.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
