    Hired Law firm 2025-2026
I have raised concerns about the billing in my case. They called me and said that my case is so complicated that it took all of my retainer and then some to get to automatic temporary orders, which they are claiming is showing something for this case. I am sorry but I don't see that the work that was done is worth $6000. The lawyer that I am working with said hey I am still going to help you. Send me the email with the next steps and it's basically a restart from the beginning. In my humble opinion, I think that I was ripped off. They are going to smile and tell you that they will help you but in reality they just want to take your money with no help whatsoever. I asked him how much he would charge me to get to the point where I actually have a parenting plan in place which is the reason I hired the guy, he said $2000/$3000 but when I asked him to make it a fixed fee to get to that point, he declined saying that they cannot be limited in their time like this. So it's another bait to get you to continue but so that they keep charging you. Had I have been informed that writing a parenting plan would cost me $10000 I would have never hired them. I researched before hiring and talked to a few different lawyers prior to making my decision and I would never recommend this firm! They basically stole $6000 from me without getting me anything in return.

Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
