Hired Attorney 2004-2006I am a father who went through a 2 year divorce with 2 young children where Mary Leonard was our GAL. I didn't understand what she was doing while going through the divorce, I didn't understand why she was doing it. But at the end of the process it was her words to my ex-wife that resulted in my ex and I working out an uncontested agreement for our children that helped us raise those two children for over a decade. Even after that decade the next agreement we made together did not involve a GAL even being appointed. It was a privilege to have Mary Leonard appointed to help our children and I hope her service to other children and their parents continues long into the future.

Consulted Attorney 2018-2020She did not respond to e-mails. She left a child with an emotionally and verbally abusive and mentally unstable father.

Hired Attorney 2011-2013Atty Leonard was a complete blessing during my divorce. She is so respected by other attorneys and the courts, and is very fair and keeps you level headed on what is important. She is extremely knowledgeable, compassionate, and competent. You can't go wrong unless you are looking to waste your money!

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
