0.5 out of 5 stars

Basil Loeb appears to be more interested in his relationship with the court than his client. When first contacted, Loeb thought we had a very good case. However, I had to contact him on several occasions to make sure that things were progressing. Not being communicative is strike 1. The agreement offered by the court was not acceptable, and he agreed and suggested we take the case to court. As the court date approached, I had not heard from him in months. I reached out and he sent several terse messages that culminated in a request to come into his office. I am not a Tosa resident. The meeting turned out to be completely unncecessary, Strike 2. Sitting in their conference room, I was reminded of buying a car while the salesman "talks to the boss". After discussing the case like it was his first time hearing the details, he excused himself to call the Village attorney. He came back with a take or leave it "deal" and advised me to take the deal because he could not win in court. That experience was strike 3, and the lousy deal he negotiated was strike 4, and making me make a decision on the spot is strike 5. I'll give him 1/2 star for not being outrageously expensive, although the value was nil. No, I would never recommend Basil Loeb to do any legal work for anyone.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

Comfort Level
- Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?

Credentials
- How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?

Cost
- How are the lawyer's fees structured - hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?

City
- Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
