"I have worked with Family Law Group for more than five years, and I cannot say enough positive things about my experience. My divorce has been exceptionally contentious, and throughout every stage of the process, FLG has been a steadfast and powerful advocate on my behalf. What sets FLG apart is their commitment to pursuing outcomes that are fair, reasonable, and grounded in the realities of each family's circumstances. They took the time to understand not only my situation, but also the impact the divorce has had on my children, and consistently advocated for our best interests. Their team is responsive, thorough, and diligent, ensuring that every issue is addressed and every request is followed through to completion. Navigating a high-conflict divorce can be overwhelming, but FLG's expertise, professionalism, and unwavering support helped me overcome countless challenges along the way. I am deeply grateful for their dedication and commitment throughout this journey. Hired Law firm 2024I was represented by Family Law Group, Inc. from June through December 2024 and paid approximately $84,698 in legal fees during that seven-month period. When the representation ended, my family law case remained active and significant litigation was still ahead. I ultimately had to continue the case on my own. Due to concerns regarding the fees charged and the representation I received, I pursued the State Bar of California's Mandatory Fee Arbitration process. That proceeding resulted in a partial refund of fees. One aspect of my experience deserves special mention. After my attorney-client relationship with the firm had already ended, I filed complaints with the State Bar concerning issues that arose during my representation. At that point, I was no longer a client of the firm. After those complaints were filed, I received additional invoices totaling more than $20,000. Those invoices included billing entries described as responses to State Bar complaints initiated by me and work related to fee arbitration initiated by me. Those charges were later withdrawn and removed from my account. My concerns regarding this representation extended beyond fee arbitration. I have also pursued disciplinary complaints through the State Bar process, and related matters remain ongoing. Based on my personal experience, I do not believe the representation I received justified the amount of fees I paid. My experience ultimately led to State Bar fee arbitration, a partial refund of fees, State Bar complaints, and the need to continue my litigation without counsel. Prospective clients should carefully review billing statements, maintain complete records of communications and documents, and closely monitor the progress of their case throughout the representation. This review reflects my personal experience and my understanding of the proceedings related to my representation.

Hired Law firm 2018-2023I highly recommend Shane Nielson at Family Law in Livermore, CA. Not only did Shane understand the complexity of a 5 year, long, high-conflict case, he was able to listen with care while keeping things "practical" (things in court aren't practical at times). He obviously understood every aspect of family law, he knew of the judges, and of the petitioners lawyers as well (he had multiple). I believe Shane kept it classy while on and off the field, which I found it interesting when petitioners lawyer talked about his client before a hearing (although interesting, it was unprofessional). I applaud Shane for handling that as he did. Shane's knowledge of how to navigate the court system with admissible documentation and the unwavering intolerance for hearsay kept me on the right track. He told it to me straight when he needed to, pulled the trigger when the time was right (figuratively), and never let me get too far ahead of myself (which is easy to do). His advice was always priceless. On point. And in my opinion, worth the very expensive bills. My kids safety was everything to me, so thank you for that, Shane. The impact you made was all together priceless, and you made a pretty good counselor at times too (even though it was clear that I needed a therapist and not a lawyer at times, but for 5 years, you were it)!! It was nice that we were able to settle right before trial. If you need a family law attorney, I highly recommend Mr. Nielson.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
