Overview
Timothy was born in the Netherlands, and his family immigrated to the United States when he was 6 years of age. He was one of five children and has four older siblings. His family settled in Walnut Creek, California, where he was raised and attended high school. He attended Diablo Valley College, in Pleasant Hill, and graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in Political Science in 1982. He attended Golden Gate Law School and graduated with his J.D. in 1987. While attending law school, he met the woman that he ultimately married, and they have been together for thirty-six years. They have a son who is a police officer and a daughter who is a homemaker, and four grandchildren.
Timothy is licensed to practice in California and has been an active member of the California State Bar since 1987. He is admitted to practice before the United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit, and the United States District Court for the Eastern, Northern and Southern Districts. He has a BV rating with Martindale-Hubbell. During his many years of practice since 1987, he has litigated and tried cases in both state and federal courts. During the course of his practice, he has tried an excess of thirty-five bench trials, almost all of them having resulted in favorable decisions. His practice consists exclusively of litigation since his admission to the bar. At present, it includes complex litigation, probate and trust litigation, fiduciary abuse, business and commercial disputes, professional negligence and landlord-tenant disputes.
Timothy is a railfan and model railroad enthusiast and has an HO and N Scale layout at home that he enjoys tinkering with. His wife is active in animal rescue, and he and his wife have rescued roughly twenty dogs of various breeds and sizes and an equal number of cats.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
