We used Katie to handle our daughter?s divorce, which had several atypical and complicating factors. Katie quickly understood our daughter?s situation and our desired outcome. Throughout the process, we found Katie and her staff to be very professional and easy to communicate with. Everything went as smoothly and as quickly as the system would allow. We were extremely pleased with the outcome. Katie is an experienced and skilled lawyer; just as importantly, this firm is honest, fair, and reasonable in its billing practices. I very highly recommend Katie and her firm.

    Consulted Attorney Kathryn Bissonnette 2023
Through the domestic violence advocacy, they referred me to Katie pro bono. I imagine this is why she did not advocate for me, as she was not getting paid. I had strong and clear proof for a restraining order or at least to provide defense against my ex trying to get a restraining order on me. Katie not only did not advocate for me but set up an agreement where I would have to be out of my own house in a very short period of time and thus I lost. All of this had nothing to do with why we were at court and she ultimately made it worse. This case has been dragging on and she has refused to take any of it on.

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
