Overview

Steven J. Gaba

Rockville, Maryland Divorce and Family Law Attorney

The most important goal of my practice is to help individuals find a dignified solution to divorce and custody issues. I am committed to exhausting every alternative before litigating your family law case. I aim to show clients that most disputes can be resolved out of court, protecting your best interests while avoiding the expense and turmoil of a trial.

I represent clients in Bethesda, Potomac, Chevy Chase and throughout Montgomery County in all aspects of Maryland family law. I have practiced law for nearly 30 years, including 25 years of exclusive focus on divorce and family law matters. I established Steven J. Gaba as a solo practice in 2003, with the goal of expanding the use of alternative dispute resolution for my clients.

Compassion and Close Contact in Exploring Your Options

I understand the tensions of ending a marriage, especially when there are deep disagreements over division of property, where the kids will live, and ongoing financial support. Yet many people do not realize that there are alternatives to fighting it out in family court - procedures that allow you considerable control in customizing your divorce or custody agreement. I will take the time to listen to your unique situation and explore out-of-court alternatives, including mediation, collaborative law, and arbitration. I strive to put the solution in your hands. In those circumstances when litigation is warranted, I can capably protect your interests in court.

Two of the most common complaints against law firms are (a) "You're not the person I hired" and (b) "They won't return my calls." I will be your direct point of contact. Only on the rarest of occasions will someone else take your call or meet with you. I handle your case myself from initial consultation to final resolution. I also believe that client communication is important - being accessible when you have questions or concerns, and contacting you about developments or upcoming decisions. I rely heavily on e-mail communication to allow my clients greater and more flexible communication with me.

Qualified to Represent Your Interests

I maintain a strong connection to the legal community though memberships to national and local bar associations. I am a member of the Family Law Sections of the Bar Association for Montgomery County and the District of Columbia Bar. I am also a member of the Maryland and American Bar Associations and part of the National Order of Barristers. In addition, I serve as a facilitator for the Montgomery County Circuit Court Family Division. Additionally, I am a member of the International Association of Collaborative Professionals, an organization whose goal is to help assist individuals reach resolution to their disputes without engaging in costly and stressful litigation.

Your Profile?  Update Now

When viewing a listing, consider the state advertising restrictions to which lawyers and law firms must adhere, as well as our FindLaw.com Legal Directory disclaimer. Some lawyers publish comparative information regarding the services that they provide which may be subject to specific comparative communications restrictions.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
