Firm Information
Overview
For more than two decades, Steven J. Gaba has been providing effective and compassionate family law representation for clients going through divorce or other family law challenges. Our family law firm emphasizes alternative dispute resolution (ADR), seeking wherever possible to resolve family conflicts collaboratively, which can increase the degree of control clients have over their final settlements. Where this is not possible, however, our law firm provides strong and determined representation for cases that go to court.
Attorney Steven J. Gaba also represents children in high-conflict custody cases, a process that has informed his handling of other family law matters. Similarly, he represents children with special educational needs, helping families address learning needs in school and other topics related to children's disabilities. He also represents adults in guardianship cases.
We understand that going through a divorce or other family change can be a highly stressful and confusing time. We empathize with the upheaval our clients are going through, and take the time to craft a personalized strategy that best reflects our clients goals and needs. Whether you need help for a divorce, a child custody matter, a modification or another related issue, our Rockville, Maryland, family law firm is here to help.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
