    Hired Attorney 2018
If you are planning to hire Mr.Alfonso as your lawyer, make sure you know of a good malpractice lawyer as well. I have never worked with such an unethical person. He was hired as my son in law's immigration lawyer. He demanded a $50,000.00 deposit to start on the case after my son in law was unfairly detained while at his marriage interview with my daughter and my grandchildren. He claimed that he was good friends with an immigration judge. He knew I was in a very desperate situation and sent his father over to my establishment, to tell me to bring in that large retainer and Albert would take my case. I went to the office in Cinnaminson. After signing the contract and handed over the 50 thousand. He patted me on the back and told me that I could relax and my son in law would be home soon. I never physically saw him again, yet funds were constantly being used, including him hiring an additional lawyer not in his firm, who ended up leaving a week before my son in law was actually deported. I couldn't get explanations on what the funds were used for exactly. He will never return any calls, will cancel any meetings he sets up right beforehand, will be "out of town" or on "vacation" therefore unreachable, although whenever I drove past the office to and from my daily commute his car would be there. When you try to report him to the ethics board, good luck, because he has made sure that would be useless since he is on the ethics committee board. So you will just get bounced and jerked around. If you have any other questions or concerns about hiring this lawyer, just ask anyone in the Riverside Portuguese community just to start, or through this review.

How do I choose a lawyer?

Consider the following:

  • Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
  • Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
  • Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
  • City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?

Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?

Here are a few to get you started:

  • How long have you been in practice?
  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • How often do you settle cases out of court?
  • What are your fees and costs?
  • What are the next steps?

Want to check lawyer discipline?

It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:

  • Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
  • Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
  • Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
