Overview
At the Walnut Creek, California, law firm of Bowles & Verna LLP, we represent clients who have suffered catastrophic personal injuries or the wrongful death of a loved one arising from aviation accidents, motor vehicle accidents, toxic torts and workplace accidents. In 25 years as a law firm, we have helped our clients recover millions in compensation for spinal cord injuries, burn injuries and brain injuries. We also represent clients in business litigation arising from real estate and commercial disputes, fraud, and construction.
Our law firm handles extremely complex lawsuits for individuals and businesses. Our international aviation accidents practice is just one example of how we focus on large, complicated litigation issues for our clients.
We represent clients throughout the world who have been injured or who have lost a loved one in a plane or helicopter crash. We have successfully handled numerous international aviation accident cases in which we have won millions of dollars for our clients, including the Air Philippines crash ($62 million), the Helios 737 crash in Greece ($11 million for six clients), and the Korean Airlines 801 crash in 1997 ($34 million for our clients).
These cases involve complex issues that include the application of international treaties and foreign laws, as well as technical product liability. With this much experience with these complicated international aviation accident issues, we are equipped and prepared to handle the most complicated litigation matter you might be facing.
At Bowles & Verna LLP, we have 23 attorneys. We are small enough to maintain efficiency of action, yet large enough to be able to support major international litigation. Practicing both plaintiff and defense litigation gives us a strategic advantage in preparing for trial. We have a track record of success, with exceptional experience. All of our trial attorneys have a minimum of 10-15 years experience, and our two partners, Richard Bowles and Michael Verna, have more than 75 combined years of legal experience.

Hired Law firm 2026I am in Chicago, but I received a frivolous lawsuit from California because I shipped something there. I used google to find a California lawyer. I chose four law firms to check out. Two of them were very hard to get a hold of a person. I finally connected and found out they have no experience in dealing with this very common lawsuit. I called the third one and was told the lawyer is very busy and I should email- which I did. I asked a very basic question- would it help if I was willing to come to California and go to court? She said that by California state law she can not give any legal advice before I send her a $5,000 retainer. Wow. "The check is in the mail." On to the fourth law firm. Bowles & Verna. Someone actually answered the phone quickly! At this point, I probably needed a therapist in addition to a lawyer as I rambled on about how I have been in business for over 40 years and have never been sued and.... All the while, I heard the clicking of her key board as she was taking copious notes of everything I was saying. I actually felt better. Someone was listening! Within an hour, a lawyer, Cathleen Huang called me, even though it was after 5pm. She could tell from the notes that were sent her that I was upset and she wanted to get back to me as soon as possible. Besides being very knowledgable, she was a calming voice and let me know she understood how upsetting these situations can be and that she had the experience to handle it. Basically, a good human being- not a retainer getting machine. She told me about a retainer but was not pushy at all. We hung up. I thought about it for about 5 minutes, and called her back and asked where to sign. Within two days, she got the case dismissed. I own a company with over 100 employees that I built by being customer driven. Because of that, I know that my experience with Bowles & Verna was not just good luck. Someone hired and trained the person answering the phone, paid her to take notes, and immediately found the appropriate lawyer to quickly get back to me. They also hired Cathleen, as I am sure they recognized that she would take good care of their clients- like family. Their billing rates are also reasonable. I don't normally write reviews, but I am a big supporter of small business and recognize that finding a caring, responsive, competent law firm is not necessarily easy, especially if you are a small client. I hope this was helpful.

How do I choose a lawyer?
Consider the following:
- Comfort Level – Are you comfortable telling the lawyer personal information? Does the lawyer seem interested in solving your problem?
- Credentials – How long has the lawyer been in practice? Has the lawyer worked on other cases similar to yours?
- Cost – How are the lawyer's fees structured — hourly or flat fee? Can the lawyer estimate the cost of your case?
- City – Is the lawyer's office conveniently located?
Not sure what questions to ask a lawyer?
Here are a few to get you started:
- How long have you been in practice?
- How many cases like mine have you handled?
- How often do you settle cases out of court?
- What are your fees and costs?
- What are the next steps?
Want to check lawyer discipline?
It is always a good idea to research your lawyer prior to hiring. Every state has a disciplinary organization that monitors attorneys, their licenses, and consumer complaints. By researching lawyer discipline you can:
- Ensure the attorney is currently licensed to practice in your state
- Gain an understanding of his or her historical disciplinary record, if any.
- Determine the seriousness of complaints/issues which could range from late bar fees to more serious issues requiring disciplinary action.
